Inspiring Barbie Dolls

Mattel announced its next dolls for Barbie’s Inspiring Women Series. Figures of Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks, and astronaut Sally Ride will join mathematician Katherine Johnson, artist Frida Kahlo, and pilot Amelia Earhart, in the series. Mattel chooses female role models, “who took risks and paved the way for the next generation.”

It’s Power Rangers Day! The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show came out in 1993. 5 ordinary teenagers morph into the Power Rangers, gaining special powers, assault machines called Zords, and stretchy suits. Get some friends together, pick your favorite Ranger color, and create a Megazord to fight off the bad guys. Go go Power Rangers!

KFC never thought it would happen, but Kentucky Fried Chicken might finally go Beyond Fried Chicken. The restaurant will debut meatless chicken at their Smyrna Georgia location. Depending on customer feedback, KFC may decide to carry the vegan nuggets at more locations. Then you can get their 11 herbs and spices, without eating a chicken!

Computer Celebrates Her Birthday

Yesterday, Katherine Johnson turned 101. The retired mathematician worked for NASA as a human computer. She calculated orbital equations for the trajectories of Apollo and Friendship missions by hand! As an African-American woman, she was a pioneer in the space program, and continues to be an inspiring role-model with her book, “Reaching for the Moon.”

Hooray for Bats

Tonight is International Bat Night. Watch bats swoop around, eating insects. Did you know they can eat 1000 mosquitoes per hour? Other types of bats eat fruit, like the giant golden-crowned flying fox. It has a wingspan of 5 1/2 feet! Bats are also pollinators, like bees and butterflies. Bats are amazing!

Baby Anteater Needs a Name

Last month, a giant anteater pup was born at the River Safari park in Singapore. The baby hasn’t been named yet, but you can vote for your favorite name on Wildlife Reserves Singapore’s Facebook page. You can choose Estrella, which means Star in Spanish, or Amazon, which is the giant anteater’s natural habitat.
