Nuts About Marzipan

Today is Marzipan Day. Marzipan is made using almond meal, and sugar or honey. The paste can be rolled out to cover cakes, or formed into sweet edible sculptures, like tiny animals or fruits, realistically painted with food coloring. I’d like to make all the planets. You could make a marzipan pan of Marses!

Would You Like to Supersize That?

A wild elephant in Thailand misunderstood the meaning of “drive-thru restaurant.” Auan-tia, an elephant who lives in the Chachoengsao wildlife sanctuary, was blocking the road and taking food from passing vehicles. He grabbed some sugarcane from the first truck, then continued down the row picking the crops he liked! I hope he supersized it!

Learn to Code, Old-School

Dot-dash, dot-dash-dot-dot, dot, dash-dot-dot-dash, dot-dash. That’s my name! What’s yours? It’s Learn Your Name In Morse Code Day. Morse code assigned a pattern of short and long taps to each letter, to communicate by telegraph before telephones were invented. Use it to send messages by flashlight, or tapping on your desk.

Doodling for the Future

Sarah Gomez-Lane may only be in second grade, but she’s already working on paying for college. She won a $30,000 scholarship in the Doodle for Google contest! Sarah’s design of dinosaurs in the shape of the Google logo, was inspired by her dream of becoming a paleontologist. She also wins $50,000 for her school. Great job!

Cleaner Trains on Track

The UK will soon be running hydrogen-fueled trains. The clean trains, called Breeze, would emit only water, and zero harmful emissions! The sleek new trains will be quieter, and have more room for passengers. Hydrogen trains are already running in Germany. Breeze trains should be running in the United Kingdom by 2022.
