That’s One Deep Hole

Scientists in Antarctica drilled a hole nearly 4000 feet deep, ending in a lake deep below the ice. Lake Mercer was called a lost lake, since it was inaccessible to experiments. Now, researchers can dip into the waters through the tiny hole, to study the subglacial world, and perhaps even discover some new organisms!

Young People Clean Up Party Mess

New Year’s Eve celebrations leave a mess, when people party in the streets. Yesterday in the United Kingdom, over 1000 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, started the year with good deeds, by rising early and cleaning up the streets. In 50 cities, young people filled garbage bags with trash, while their communities slept in.

No Retakes This Time

Early this morning, the New Horizons spacecraft flew past Ultima Thule, the most distant world ever studied by humans. The space rock is in the Kuiper Belt, a billion miles past Pluto! As the spacecraft whizzed by Ultimate Thule at 32,000 miles per hour, it was taking hundreds of pictures. I hope they weren’t blurry!

Improving the Environment

2018 was a good year for the environment. People became more aware of the hazards of plastic, leading many companies to get rid of plastic bags, and inspiring scientists to develop biodegradable plastics. People around the world planted trees, some countries protected forest or ocean habitats, and renewable energy became more popular. Hooray for Earth!

A bald eagle named Clark, gave fans an up-close view at a recent football game in Texas. Before the game between the Clemson Tigers and the Norte Dame Fighting Irish, the eagle was supposed to fly around during the national anthem. Instead, the huge bird perched on a fan’s back! Maybe he was tired!

NASA wants to send hot air balloons to the scorchingly hot planet, to measure seismic activity. Studying Venusquakes could tell scientists more about the internal composition of Venus, and why it’s so different from Earth.
