Scientists have discovered a new ecosystem at the bottom of the ocean. Deep in the Pescadero Basin, cracks called hydrothermal vents, let out heat from volcanoes. The area, called Jaich Maa, has mounds of calcite pouring hot liquid into an upside-down pool. It’s home to new species that scientists have never seen before!

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, is in orbit around the Sun. It completed its first solar flyby last month, and sent back its first photo! The picture shows a helmet streamer, which is a loop of gases and plasma, taken from only 16.9 million miles away. Earth is 93,000,000 miles away. Imagine how hot that probe is!

Today is Monkey Day! It started as a joke when a college student wrote “Monkey Day” on his friend’s calendar, but it’s now celebrated around the world. The smallest monkeys are Pygmy marmosets, at only 4.6 inches long! Act like a monkey today; jump around and eat a banana!

NASA’s InSight lander, which landed on Mars last month, just took its first selfie yesterday! The photo is a composite, made of 11 different photos stitched together. It shows the solar panels, weather sensor, and the deck full of scientific instruments. It’s a lovely photo, but InSight forgot to smile!

Scientists have discovered the fastest animal movement in the world, but you’ll have to look closely. The tiny Dracula ant can snap its jaws shut 5000 times faster than the blink of an eye! Their mandibles go from 0 to 198 miles-per-hour in .000015 seconds. Awesome! Also, they like to suck blood from their own larvae. Yuck!

The Norwegian government has agreed to ban their biofuel industry from buying palm oil, starting in 2020. The palm oil industry is a major cause of deforestation, which destroys the rainforest habitat of orangutans and other endangered species. Norway is the first country ban palm oil biofuel, but the European Union will follow in 2030.

In Connecticut, someone has cut the cheese in a big way. Stew Leonard’s dairy store has the world’s biggest cheese sculpture, carved by Sara “The Cheese Lady” Kauffman. A 3,462 pound “Customer Service Rock of Commitment”, was sculpted from a humongous block of cheddar cheese! Now you can buy a slice of history!

in Florida, a dog might have gotten the blame for eating all the dog food, if it weren’t for security cameras! Video footage shows a bear reaching in through the screened window on the back porch, pulling out the entire bag of dog food, and stealing away into the night!
