Stop Hogging All the Blankets

Valery Larkin wanted to create the world’s largest knitted blanket, so she started Knitters of the World. People could donate hand-knitted blanket segments, and help set the record. The pieces came from 32 countries, and were assembled in Ireland. The final blanket measured 21,472 square feet, before being cut into smaller blankets, and donated to charity.

Game of Beetles

You might be able to guess, that entomologist Brett Radcliffe is a fan of the TV series, Game of Thrones. He discovered 3 new beetles, and their orange markings reminded him of fire, so he named them after dragons on the show. Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion are now immortalized as Gymnetis drogoni, rhaegali, and viserioni.

That’s One Deep Hole

Scientists in Antarctica drilled a hole nearly 4000 feet deep, ending in a lake deep below the ice. Lake Mercer was called a lost lake, since it was inaccessible to experiments. Now, researchers can dip into the waters through the tiny hole, to study the subglacial world, and perhaps even discover some new organisms!

Young People Clean Up Party Mess

New Year’s Eve celebrations leave a mess, when people party in the streets. Yesterday in the United Kingdom, over 1000 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, started the year with good deeds, by rising early and cleaning up the streets. In 50 cities, young people filled garbage bags with trash, while their communities slept in.
