Plastic Bags Going Bye-Bye

The biggest supermarket chain in the United States, Kroger, is going to get rid of plastic grocery bags. Starting with the Pacific Northwest in 2019, they will phase out single-use bags by 2025 in all Kroger, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, and Ralphs stores, eliminating 6 billion plastic bags per year. Just start using reusable totes now!

40,000 Year-Old Baby Horse

Scientists have found a fossilized baby horse in Siberia. The foal is nearly perfect, looking like it could be sleeping. It was only 2 to 3 months old when it died in the Paleolithic period, 30 to 40,000 years ago. The permafrost in Siberia always stays below freezing, perfectly preserving and mummifying specimens.

Birds Know Cigarettes are Toxic

Birds build their nests using found materials, from sticks and moss to plastic bags and cigarette butts. Scientists in Mexico found that birds were actually using cigarette butts to repel parasitic ticks! Studying house finches, they found the birds added butts only to nests with live ticks. They knew the cigarettes were pesticides!

Pyramid of Water Skiers

Water skiing takes balance. Water skiing in pyramid formations with 79 other people is quite another level! The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team, the Webfooters, and the Aquanuts, all got together to ski their way to a world record. Their 80-person water skiing pyramid formation is the largest one ever!

Plastic Football Jerseys

The University of Miami’s football team, the Hurricanes, has new jerseys to wear this season. Parley for the Oceans, an ocean conservation group, partnered with Adidas to produce the shirts from recycled materials! The yarn was made from fishing nets and other plastics collected from the ocean. That’s creative recycling!

Kitty Castle Reconciliation

Billy Browne’s cat, Rufus, was upset because Billy had to give him painful ear medication for 2 weeks. Rufus didn’t trust him anymore, so Billy built him a huge castle out of cardboard boxes to make up for it! Rufus loved the living room-sized cardboard castle, his ears are healthy again, and all is forgiven.
