At the Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society in Moscow, geologists announced the discovery of a new mineral. The mineral was found in a rock from space, and has been named uakitite, since the metor was found in the Uakit region of Siberia. Unfortunately, the uakitite samples are microscopic.

This weekend, the Perseid meteor showers will hit their peak. Earth passes through the comet Swift/Tuttle’s tail, and bits of the comet burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, creating blazing meteors. Earth’s Northern Hemisphere could see 60 shooting stars per hour, late at night! Most Perseid meteors are tiny, weighing only as much as a paperclip.

Security footage captured a hairy thief outside a home in Lake Tahoe California. A bear easily opened an unlocked car door with its paw, got into the back seat, and exited with a bag of food! Last week in Vancouver Island Canada, 95 year-old Anna Stady chased a bear out of her kitchen, twice!

Farmers in Manitoba Canada set a new world record last weekend. 303 combine harvesters teamed up at once, to harvest a wheat field. The machines created a giant cloud of dust as they rumbled through the field. The event, organized by Harvest for Kids, raised money for Children’s Camps International.

A glowing green comet, nicknamed the Incredible Hulk, may be visible in the sky tonight for those in the Northern Hemisphere. The cloud of dust surrounding the comet, is twice as big as Jupiter, and gets its color from cyanide and carbon molecules. The Southern Hemisphere will get to see it in mid-August.

In Chile, where it’s winter right now, bus driver Cristhian Lizama was surprised to have a dog get on his bus. The stray dog looked cold and tired, so he let it stay and take a nap. Other drivers have also given the pup rides. A cute furry face is enough for bus fare!

In Pacifica California, the World Dog Surfing Championships took place. Skyler the Surfdog took home the Shredder of the Year award, while Gidget, Giselle, Derby, Teddy, Abbie Girl, Beans, and Rusty were other top dogs in their categories. There were also Top Ball-Fetch-in-Water, and Dog Beach Fashion competitions. What a fun day for dogs!
