Plastics and straws have been getting a lot of attention, because they are so bad for the environment. Starbucks is the latest company with plans to discontinue their use of plastic straws. Instead of the 1 billion straws a year they currently use, they’ll use a strawless lid or biodegradable straws.

Can you do chin-ups? How about hula hoop? What about doing chin-ups while hula hooping! Rachael Lust just did a record breaking 12 chin-ups while rotating a hoop around her waist. Chin-ups are done with your palms facing in, while pull-ups are performed with palms facing out. Most pull-ups while hula hooping has its own record.

Researchers have found fossilized chlorophyll, a pigment found in plants and bacteria, in rocks over one billion years old. The pigment was pink! Chlorophyll itself is actually green, but the molecular building blocks of chlorophyll, called porphyrins, can be red or purple. The ancient oceans were swimming with brightly-colored microscopic cyanobacteria!

ZooAmerica at Hershey Park welcomed 5 new babies last month. Four pronghorn fawns were born, named Amy, Megan, Callum and Kathy. The pronghorn antelope is the fastest animal in North America! A harbor seal pup, named Cocoa, was also born. She already weighs twice as much as when she was born!

Diamond rings are beautiful and sparkly. But one ring sparkles just a little more, with a record-breaking 6,690 diamonds on it! The ring is shaped like a lotus flower, with 48 individual diamond-covered petals. The ring’s creators, Vishal and Khushbu Agarwal, hope to raise awareness about water conservation, with the 4 million dollar ring.

23 year-old Miranda Wang, and her co-founder Jenny Yao, have started a company called BioCellection. The Canadian researchers developed a way to break down plastics that are difficult to recycle, using a chemical process. The process turns plastic into liquid chemicals that can be used instead of petroleum, to make nylon.

Lynea Lattanzio loves cats. She started rescuing cats from overcrowded animal shelters, and taking in kittens. Soon, her house filled up and became “The Cat House on the Kings.” It’s home to 1100 cats! She moved out, and has 45 volunteers to help take care of them. She’s saved 28,000 cats over the last 24 years!
