A Long Awaited Honor

Esmond Allcock is one of the oldest men in Canada at 108 years old. He had 6 children, 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, but no namesake. His granddaughter Jenna just gave him a wonderful gift: she named her new son Esmond, Jr! After 71 descendants, he finally has someone named after him!

Beast From the East

Much of Europe is being blasted by the “Beast from the East,” bringing snow and freezing temperatures. Unusually warm weather at the North Pole has pushed Siberia’s freezing air across Europe to the Mediterranean and the British Isles. Temperatures in the Arctic were more than 50 degrees Fahrenheit above average while Rome saw rare snow.

Poor February… When King Numa Pompilius added January and February to the first Roman 10-month calendar, he altered all the months to have a lucky odd number of days. February, a month honoring the dead, became the unlucky month with 28 days. The calendar changed through the years, but February never got any more days.

Another New State of Matter

Scientists have discovered another new state of matter. The commonly observable forms are liquid, solid, gas, and plasma. The newest discovery is Rydberg polarons, occurring only in ultra-cold temperatures. It’s when one of an atom’s electrons orbits far enough from the nucleus that another atom fits inside the orbit.
