The ultimate in hands-free technology, it picks up speech, and transmits sound through the teeth and skull, directly to the inner ear. Walkie-talkies can’t compete with Molar Mics!

It’s International Eat An Apple Day! If there’s an apple orchard near you, go pick your own, because they’re ripe now. It’s also International Red Panda Day. 60 zoos worldwide will be celebrating, by creating Red Panda Rangers: children who spread the word about endangered red pandas. They are more like raccoons than pandas.

93 year-old Bob Williams has a weekly tradition. For the last 11 years, he’s bought 3 Hershey’s chocolate bars every Saturday, when he goes to the Dollar General store. He gives 2 candy bars to store employees, and one to the person in line behind him. The Candy Man has given away more than 6000 treats!

Tiny Turbines Catch the Breeze

Wind turbines are a great way to harness energy, but buildings in cities interfere with air flow. But a small device called the O-Wind Turbine can attach to apartment balconies, catching crosswinds from every direction, to generate electricity. Its creators, Nicolas Orellana and Yaseen Noorani, won the James Dyson Award for their innovative design.

The struggle of eating a popsicle before it melts may be a thing of the past. Bompas & Parr have created the “world’s first non-melting ice lolly.” It’s based on a recipe for pykrete, an ultra-strong ice developed during World War 2, made with sawdust and water. Instead of using wood pulp, they use fruit fibers.

Welcome, Baby Tonks!

The Denver Zoo in Colorado introduced its new baby aye-aye, named Tonks. She was born in August, to mom Bellatrix, and dad Smeagol. The aye-aye is an endangered member of the lemur family, native to Madagascar. They chew holes in trees, then use their long middle fingers to dig out juicy grubs to eat.
