The sale of ivory has been banned in China! Most ivory is obtained from elephant tusks. Elephants are an endangered species because of poaching and habitat loss. Nearly 30,000 elephants a year were killed illegally for their tusks, so conservationists are excited that China has taken this big step to help protect them.

In Florida, unusual cold weather has been causing iguanas to fall from the sky. The large cold-blooded lizards have been falling from their perches in trees because they become immobile at low temperatures. They generally recover once they thaw out, so if you find frozen iguanas, move them to a sunny outdoor location.

In much of the world today, it’s colder than Antarctica! Of course, maybe that’s not as impressive when you realize it’s summer there, with nearly 24 hours of daylight. The highest temperature ever recorded in Antarctica was a mild 63 degrees Fahrenheit. Antarctica’s lowest temperature was 135.8 degrees below 0, the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth!

Many animals hibernate for the winter, but did you know some animals freeze it out? Some frogs, reptiles, and insects have chemicals that protect their bodies when ice forms in them, so they can freeze solid and thaw out in the spring. That frozen frog you found might still be alive!

Satellite imagery shows that Earth’s ozone layer is recovering. The ozone shield is the region of Earth’s stratosphere that protects us from the Sun’s radiation, and chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, had formed a hole in it. CFCs were banned decades ago, but the molecules can take 100 years to leave the atmosphere.

9th graders in Jutland Denmark illustrated the dangers of cell phones by planting seeds in two rooms. One room contained two wi-fi routers to simulate the radiation from sleeping next to a cell phone. After 12 days, the seeds in that room were dead, while the empty room had healthy green plants!

A bomb cyclone just blasted the East Coast of the United States, but not everyone got snow. If you want snow and you have temperatures colder than 25 degrees below 0, you can make your own with an adult’s help! A pot of boiling water thrown into the air will vaporize and fall as snow.

Today is National Bird Day. There are over 10,000 bird species. The largest non-flying bird is the ostrich, the kori bustard is the biggest that can fly, and the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan at up to 11 feet! The bee hummingbird is smallest at 2 1/4 inches long. The Australian lyrebird sounds like R2-D2!
