A Good Month for Meteor Showers

Even though the peak of the Geminids meteor showers was last night, the nearly-full moon may have washed them out. You can still catch them in the night sky until December 21st. The meteors appear near the constellation Gemini, created from particles of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. Soon, the Ursid meteors will also appear!

Who’s Your Favorite Monkey?

Today is Monkey Day! It started as a joke when a college student wrote “Monkey Day” on his friend’s calendar, but it’s now celebrated around the world. Did you know, almost all monkeys have tails? The smallest monkeys are Pygmy marmosets, at only 4.6 inches long! Jump around like a monkey today, and eat bananas!

These Shingles Are Delicious

Today is Gingerbread Decorating Day. Start by making gingerbread cookies, and give them faces and clothes drawn with icing. Soon, you’ll be ready to decorate a gingerbread house, with gumdrops and peppermints. Finally, you’ll be ready to be mayor, of your own gingerbread city! Don’t eat it, or you’ll be out of a job.

Roast Until They Pop

You’ve heard the song that begins, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, but have you ever eaten one? Today is Roast Chestnuts Day, so buy some chestnuts if you don’t happen to have a chestnut tree. Roast them on a campfire, grill, or in the oven, until the skin splits, then peel and eat!

Long Lost Treasures

Are you missing any mittens? Is your hat in hiding? Today is Lost And Found Day, so try and track down all your missing items. Check the Lost and Found box at school or work, for any your belongings. Clean under your bed, and you may find lost socks, library books, or spare change!

A Day for a Horse of Course!

Happy Day Of The Horse. Horses have lived on Earth more than 50,000,000 years. Humans domesticated horses, for travel, farming, or sports, but wild horses still exist. Horses can run up to 55 miles-per-hour! The world’s tallest horse, Big Jake, is over 7 feet tall. Thumbelina, the world’s smallest horse, was only 17 inches!

Sweet Melodies and Warm Cocoa

Today is Violin Day, the first instrument that many kids learn to play. If your school has a strings program, be sure to sign up! You can always listen to classical, bluegrass, or Irish music to hear some fantastic violin playing! Listen with a cup of hot chocolate, because it’s also National Cocoa Day!

Green Belt Around the Desert

After 46 years of work, China has encircled the entire Taklamakan Desert with trees. The final 100 trees of the Green Great Wall of China, were planted last week. The ring of trees will help contain the shifting sands, and has increased the forest coverage of China, by 25%. Orchards will be planted next.

Bring All the Kids for Free

The Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin, is now free for all children 12 and under. Someone gave an anonymous gift of 3.5 million dollars to the museum to cover admission for kids, because they had “fond memories of visiting the museum with their family throughout their life.” What a nice thing to do!

Your Breath Smells Fantastic

Today is 12-Hour Fresh Breath Day, so do yourself a favor. Brush your teeth first thing in the morning, because plaque stinks! Brush again after every meal. Don’t forget to floss the particles from between your teeth, so you don’t have rotten food stuck in the cracks. Everyone will love your clean smile.
