Conservators have carefully opened a second time capsule, found in the base of a Confederate statue, that was removed in Virginia. The copper box, buried since 18 87, was water-damaged. It held an 18 65 Harper’s Weekly magazine picturing Abraham Lincoln’s grave, a Bible, coins, letters, newspapers, Civil War bullets, and a Richmond directory.

Teen Likes to Make People Smile

18-year-old Sebbie Hall, has a mission. Every day during the pandemic, the English teen has performed a random act of kindness. He especially enjoys helping disabled or vulnerable children, who feel lonely. Sebbie has carried out over 2000 acts of kindness so far, and raised $53,000 for people in need. Let’s all be kind!

Print a free annual pass, good for everyone in the car, at Every-Kid-Outdoors.gov. Pack a snack, and happy travels!

Goats Ate My Tree

If you had a real Christmas tree this year, don’t put it in the trash. Virginia Beach uses them to protect the beachfront from storm surges. Many farms have goats that love to snack on trees. Some communities will pick up trees and turn them into mulch. Find a way to recycle your tree!

Blast From the Past

Workers dismantling the base, of a Confederate statue that was removed in Richmond Virginia, have discovered a 2nd time capsule inside the pedestal. Historical documents had mentioned the box, which should hold 60 artifacts from 18 87. The box is being studied by conservators, before it is opened. What will be inside?

Recycle All Those Light Strings

If your family puts up outdoor lights for the holidays, you may have some that don’t work anymore. The good news is, you can recycle them! Drop off your old light sets at Lowe’s or other hardware stores, or ship them to Christmas Light Source or Holiday LEDs. Start a collection at your school!

Don’t Forget the Birds

Did you know, that some hummingbirds don’t migrate during the winter? If you still have hummingbirds coming to your feeder, you can attach it to a warm window, or wrap it in bubble wrap, or a string of incandescent lights, to help keep the sugar-water from freezing. You may be their only food source!

A Minute At the Movies

126 years ago, Auguste and Louis Lumière started the motion picture industry. The brothers showed 10 short films, to an audience of 33 paying customers, in Paris France. The moving pictures showed ordinary events, and each movie was less than 1 minute long, but the audience was amazed. Today, Short Film Day, commemorates that movie history moment.
