If you look around Canada today, you might notice a lot of people wearing red mittens. That’s because it’s Red Mitten Day! Canadians wear red gloves or mittens, to show their support for their country’s Olympic athletes. It’s also Gingerbread Cookie Day, so give your gingerbread man some red mittens, made from frosting.

Scout Saves the Day

12-year-old David King, was hiking with his mom in Hawaii, when they came across a couple with an injured dog. The dog was too heavy to carry, and they were lost, with no water. David is a Boy Scout, and used his expertise to build a stretcher to carry Smokey, and guided them back.

The Water’s a Bit Hot

Scientists recently discovered 6 possible new animal species, in the Gulf of California. The creatures live around hydrothermal vents in the ocean floor, where 549° Fahrenheit water, shoots out of 80-foot-high mounds. Roundworms, crustaceans, mollusks, arrow worms, and bristle worms, were found thriving in the searing temperatures, as well as lots of bacteria.

Every year, millions of red crabs migrate to the ocean, from Australia’s Christmas Island. There are so many crabs, that many roads have to shut down, to let them pass safely. Some highways have special crab bridges, but most people just walk, and enjoy watching the unique crab migration. Merry Crabsmas!
