Have a Costume Contest

Today we celebrate Halloween. Many kids go trick-or-treating, where you go door-to-door to show off your costume, and get rewarded with candy. Or, you could hand out the candy, and eat all your favorites. Some people like to set up spooky decorations, or scare themselves at haunted houses. Whatever you do, have fun safely!

Sun Could Cause Problems This Weekend

On Thursday, a powerful solar flare erupted from the Sun. The blast from solar flares, creates waves of plasma. It also created a coronal mass ejection, or CME. CMEs are eruptions of charged particles, that can collide with Earth’s magnetic fields. The geomagnetic storm may disrupt satellites, power, and communications. Prepare to be annoyed.

The House Comes With Capybaras

A gated community in Argentina, is full of rodents of unusual size. Giant capybaras, which weigh 175 pounds and grow 4 feet long, are reclaiming their territory, and it’s happening all over the country. Developers keep building houses in their habitat, and their natural predators like jaguars are disappearing. Capybaras want their ecosystem back!

Not-So-Northern Lights

Aurora borealis, or the Northern Lights, are colorful light displays in the sky that usually occur over northern polar regions. This weekend, the Northern Lights may be visible to a new audience, in the northern United States. They could reach as far south as Michigan, New York, and West Virginia! Happy Aurora hunting!

Sheepish List

The best part of making a list, is checking or crossing off each item as it’s done. Today is Checklist Day. Make a list of things you’ve been meaning to do, then get to work! Is hugging a fluffy animal, on your list? It’s Hug A Sheep Day, so find a sheep to squeeze!

Does Candy Corn Get Moldy?

Today is Candy Corn Day. The yellow-white-and-orange candies were invented in the 18-hundreds. If you stack them up, they look like an ear of corn. Try the Turkey Dinner pack, with green bean, stuffing, and coffee flavors! Later, celebrate Haunted Refrigerator Night. Time to clean out the moldy leftovers hiding way in the back.

A Storm as High as the Space Station

The Great Red Spot on Jupiter, is actually a massive swirling storm. NASA’s Juno spacecraft, has been circling Jupiter, taking measurements of the storm, and discovered it’s up to 310 miles deep! The Great Red Spot is bigger than the entire Earth, and has been active ever since humans could see Jupiter.

Lovely Little Lemurs

Today is World Lemur Day. You might recognize several types of these small primates, in the movie “Madagascar,” but there are actually around 100 different species of lemur. They are all native to the island of Madagascar. Did you know lemurs have 2 tongues? The second smaller tongue, is used during grooming.
