Sour Grease and Punk Rock

Today is Greasy Food Day, and Sourest Day. Eat french fries with vinegar, or fried cheese curds with lemons. Make sure you eat while listening to punk rock music, since it’s also Punk For A Day Day. Use some of that grease to spike your hair, and put a sour snarl on your face!

Meeting People the Old-Fashioned Way

Andre Huet, of Quebec Canada, likes to send mail the old-fashioned way. He sends messages by bottle! Andrew Eaton-Lewis, found one of the messages on a beach in Scotland, nearly 5000 miles away. Last year, Mary Bird found another of Andre’s notes, in England. That’s one way to get new pen pals!

Perfectly Preserved Crab

While dinosaurs roamed the Earth, a tiny crab got stuck in some liquid tree sap. The amber solidified around it, preserving one of the oldest crabs ever discovered. The Cretaspara athanata crab fossil is only 5 mm long, and lived underwater 100,000,000 years ago. It should’ve stayed in the water, away from trees!

The Sound of Martian Breezes

The Mars 20 20 mission, has now recorded nearly 5 hours, of sounds from the Red Planet. 2 microphones on the Perseverance rover, capture the gusting winds, wheels crunching over rocks, and the noises of the spacecraft. Ludicrous Licorice Combinations

Today is a good day to go a little wild, because it’s Crazy Day! Wear some wacky clothes, and mix up your food. French fries in ice cream is always delicious! Since it’s also Good & Plenty Day, you could sprinkle some of the delicious pink and white candies, which contain licorice, on your spaghetti!

United By Food

Today is National Food Day, with the goal of getting people to eat natural, healthier foods. Go for the day without processed snack foods, and make a meal with fresh ingredients. It’s United Nations Day also. The UN works for all people on Earth, offering help during natural disasters, medical emergencies, and war.

Unintended Catch of the Day

Ocean fishing nets and traps, often catch unexpected animals. A lobster trap in California, had wrapped a whale in ropes. Friends on a fishing trip, spotted the entangled whale, and cut it free. Meanwhile, in Spain, researchers rescued a massive sunfish, from tuna nets. They estimate the giant fish, weighed over 4000 pounds!

See You Next Spring

San Juan Capistrano, in California, has a huge population of cliff swallows. Every year, the birds leave around the same time, to migrate south. 6000 swallows leaving at once, is quite a spectacle, so the town celebrates Swallows Depart From San Juan Capistrano Day. After they winter over in Goya Argentina, the swallows will return.

Today is Mole Day. It has nothing to do with the animals that tunnel underground, or skin growths, or the sauce made from chilies and chocolate. It refers to the unit of measurement for a substance. At 6:02 on 10/23, Avogadro’s Number is represented. 6.02 x 10^23 is roughly the number of particles per mole.

A Kitty Cat That Loves the Cold

Snow leopards are big cats, that live in the mountains of South and Central Asia. They grow up to 5 feet long, with a 3-foot tail, that they can wrap around their faces for warmth. The fur on their belly, is 5 inches thick! For Snow Leopard Day, learn more about this endangered animal.
