Vineyards in Napa Valley California, grow beautiful grapes, but mice, voles, rats, and gophers love to eat them. The farmers used to use toxic pesticides, to keep rodents away. Now, instead of using chemicals, farms are encouraging owls to nest in the vineyards. One barn owl can eat 3400 rodents a year.
Look at a globe, and you can see how the Earth is tilted on its axis. Researchers have found new evidence, suggesting the Earth tipped, 84,000,000 years ago. When something called True Polar Wander occurs, the North and South geographic poles shift. Earth’s liquid core stayed in place, as its rocky shell tilted.
The hagfish is amazingly disgusting. Sometimes called the slime eel, the hagfish has no skull or jaws. It escapes predators by releasing up to 5 gallons of slime, clogging the attacker’s gills with mucous. It eats dead animals by crawling in through their mouth and eating the carcass from the inside out. Happy Hagfish Day!

It hangs upside-down in trees, moving incredibly slowly, growing algae for camouflage, and coming down once a week to poop. You can skip wearing a belt today. It’s Suspenders Day! In some countries, they’re called braces. Whatever you call them, rainbow-colored ones are a fun way to hold your pants up. It’s also International Chef Day. Wear a chef’s hat and try out a new recipe. Create a fancy menu, for your personal restaurant!
Shlomi Katzin was scuba diving off the coast of Israel, when he found a barnacle-covered sword. The Israel Antiquities Authority said the 900-year-old sword, belonged to a knight during the Crusades. The perfectly-preserved weapon will go on display at a museum. Imagine being the Crusader, who dropped his sword overboard! What a bummer.
It’s October, and many people are planning their Halloween costumes. Even the moon is dressing up, although it’s a bit early. The full moon on October 20th, is the Hunter’s Moon. Watch around sunset, because the moon will look huge and orange as it rises, each night from October 19th through the 22nd.
The year you’re in 4th grade in the United States, you can get into any National Park for free! The Every Kid In A Park program, created by President Obama in 2015, is now called Every Kid Outdoors. 4th-graders can print a free annual pass, good for everyone in the car, at Every-Kid-Outdoors.gov.
Rainforests are home to countless species of plants, animals, and insects, as well as an important source of oxygen. The Amazon, a tropical rainforest, supplies 20% of the world’s oxygen, and holds a fifth of the world’s freshwater. North America has temperate rainforests, stretching from California’s Redwood forest, up through British Columbia to Alaska.
