Jesse Peterson is the owner of J’s Black Walnuts, in Wisconsin. He gathers the large nuts, which can damage lawnmowers, from people’s yards for free. Then he cracks them open in his garage, cleans and packages the meat, and sells the black walnuts for $22-per-pound. I wonder if anyone buys their own nuts back!

No, It Wasn’t Still Alive

Tardigrades are amazing microscopic creatures. They can survive in the cold vacuum of space, in volcanoes, and in deep underwater trenches. They can withstand radiation blasts, or live for decades without food or water. A 16,000,000 year-old tardigrade fossil was recently discovered, preserved in amber. It was only the 3rd tardigrade fossil ever found.

A Greener Way to Farm

John Deere tractors might be green in color, but AUGA tractors are greener. The Lithuanian company’s produced the first totally-green tractor, to fight pollution caused by farming equipment in Europe. The tractor has a biomethane-electric hybrid engine, which produces zero emissions. It reduces methane in the atmosphere, by using biofuel made from cow poop.

Thank You Ada Lovelace

Have you ever heard of Ada Lovelace? She was one of the first computer programmers. She and Charles Babbage, created an Analytical Engine, in 18 33. Ada’s “Sketch of the Analytical Engine, with Notes from the Translator,” was published in 18 42. 100 years later, it inspired Alan Turing’s work on the first modern computers. Happy Ada Lovelace Day!

Plan a Meteor Campout

Have you ever seen the Orionids meteor shower? The meteors are created by dust and debris left by Halley’s Comet, which burn up in our atmosphere. The best time to see them, is just before dawn. They’ll peak on October 21st, but will also be visible for days before and after.

Wild Hippos in England

A newly discovered prehistoric hippo tooth, shows hippopotamuses used to roam around Britain, 1.5 million years ago. The tooth is much older than other hippo fossils from that area, indicating a previously unknown warm period. Prehistoric hippopotamuses were twice as big as modern hippos, and needed to live in water that wouldn’t freeze.

Free Meals for School Employees

From Monday through Friday this week, McDonald’s is thanking America’s educators, with free breakfast. Teachers, school staff, and administrators can show their work ID, and get a free Thank You Meal. They’ll come in a Happy Meal box, but they probably won’t come with a toy. At least it comes with coffee!
