Honor Your Land’s First People

A day off from school or work this holiday, traditionally celebrated Columbus Day. In recent years however, the holiday has shifted to Native American Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. After all, Columbus did not discover America, but treated its inhabitants badly. The people that were already living there, are the ones we honor today.

Bees Told to Buzz Off

A vacant house in Georgia, made the perfect home, for thousands of honey bees. Swarms of bees built a hive in the building. Neighbors were afraid to walk by the house, thinking they would get stung, so they called a bee removal service. The bees were safely relocated, to a more welcoming home.

Those Rocks Are Only Babies!

After studying Moon rocks collected by China’s Chang’e-5 lunar mission, researchers concluded the specimens are only 1.97 billion years old, the youngest Moon samples collected so far. All the other samples were 1,000,000,000 years older! That means lava was still flowing at that time, on the Earth-facing side of the Moon.

Today is Walk To A Park Day. Find your closest park, and enjoy the journey! Talk about sea creatures on the way, because it’s also Squid And Cuttlefish Day. Cuttlefish and squid are cephalopods, that have 8 arms and can change color like octopuses. In addition, they have 2 longer tentacles. Want a hug?

Today is World Porridge Day. It’s great to have hot cereal on a chilly morning! It’s Hug A Drummer Day too. Tell them thanks for always keeping the beat! It’s also Cake Decorating Day, so practice your icing techniques, or learn to sculpt with fondant. Decorate a cake to look like a drum!

Chauffeured to School in a Limo

A school district in Ohio, has a massive school bus driver shortage, but one dad is helping kids get to school in luxury. Sean Rogers is driving dozens of kids to school in a limousine, borrowed from his father’s limo service. It certainly sounds more comfortable, than riding the bus!

Swimming Shells and Burrowing Penguins

Today is International African Penguin Awareness Day. The Cape or South African penguin, lives in Africa. They lay their eggs in burrows, to protect them from the heat. The holes are also handy, for hiding from leopards! It’s also Nautilus Night. The ocean-dwelling cephalopod has a spiraling shell, and swims using jet propulsion!

That Cheese Is Still Good

Today is Fire Prevention Day. This year’s theme is, “Learn the sounds of fire safety.” Have a family meeting about fire safety, then test your smoke alarms. It’s also Moldy Cheese Day. Not all mold is bad. Varieties of cheese like Gorgonzola and Camembert, are encouraged to grow mold. That’s what makes them delicious!

Today is Chess Day. Learn how to play this classic game, and you’ll soon be saying, “Checkmate!” It’s I Love Yarn Day too. You could play with a yarn-ball like a kitten, or learn to knit or crochet! Then, if your chess partner is taking too long to move, you could knit a scarf.
