Lake Vanishes Under Thin Ice

Researchers were studying old satellite photos of Antarctica, and noticed a change in the landscape. In 20 19, a huge lake disappeared. The lake on Amery Ice Shelf, in East Antarctica, held at least 21,000,000,000 cubic feet of water. The ice layer supporting it likely gave way, draining the lake into the ocean below, in only 3 days.

More Sounds from Mars

The Mars Perseverance rover, sent us the first sound recordings from the Red Planet, back in February. Now the Zhurong, China’s Mars rover, has also released audio recordings, as well as landing videos. Zhurong arrived on Mars in May, on a mission to analyze Martian soil, and search for signs of water.

Picture-Perfect Waffles

Waffles are a great invention. They’re like pancakes, but designed to hold pools of syrup! Today is Waffle Iron Day, so I’m going to use my Darth Vader and Hello Kitty irons to make fun waffles! It’s also Camera Day. Learn all the special features on your camera, and take lots of pictures!

There’s Still a Pandemic

Summertime means lots of people are going on vacation, or traveling to other countries. This makes it easy to spread COVID-19, but kids under 12 still can’t get vaccinated. Although many places no longer require masks, remember to keep washing your hands, practice social distancing, and encourage people to get vaccinated. Stay safe and healthy!

Let’s Go for a Bike Ride

Today is the third day of the 108th Tour de France, a 2161.6 mile-long bicycle race. Cyclists started near Brussels Belgium, and will travel counter-clockwise through France, over a period of 21 days. They even have to bike through the Alps mountains! 23 teams with 8 riders each will compete, and sweat enough to flush a toilet 40 times!

New Kids on the Block

The Columbus Zoo ans Aquarium, welcomed some new babies last week. 33-year-old Phoebe, gave birth to a an Asian elephant calf, and a California sea lion named Lowell, had an adorable sea lion pup. The baby elephant is already walking, but momma sea lion hasn’t taught her baby to swim yet.

Hapioca Pudding

Today is Happy Heart Hugs Day. It was created for anyone who “fills your heart with happy, that’s not close enough for regular-type hugs.” They’re the perfect socially-distanced hug. It’s also Tapioca Day. Tapioca is a starch made from the cassava plant. They’re the beads that look like frog eggs, in tapioca pudding.

Tall Tales of a Giant

Today is Paul Bunyan Day, named for the giant North American lumberjack. His big blue ox was named Babe. Legend says Paul Bunyan sawed the legs off his parents’ bed when he was 7 months old. He formed the Great Lakes as watering holes for Babe, and made the Grand Canyon by dragging his axe.
