No Need for a Bed

Today is World Giraffe Day. Did you know the animal with the longest neck, still has the same number of neck bones as you? Giraffes can grow up to 20 feet tall, and have 18-inch tongues. Giraffes only need 5 to 30 minutes of sleep each day, and babies can stand up an hour after they’re born.

Indigenous People Were Here First

Indigenous Peoples Day was started in Canada, to celebrate the history of the First Nation, Metis, and Inuit peoples. It’s now celebrated around the world. Learn about native cultures on your continent, including history that might make your ancestors look bad. Indigenous people have been mistreated everywhere, and it’s important to learn their past.

Musical Gong Show

Have you ever played a gong? Today is the Day Of The Gong, as well as World Music Day, so start your celebrations by banging a gong. If you don’t have any musical instruments, you can make your own drums with pots and spoons, whistle through a blade of grass, or build some bagpipes!

Me and a Peach

Most people have heard of selfies, when you take a photo of yourself. But did you know they can be dangerous? Every year, people die in bizarre ways, trying to get the perfect shot. Be careful today on Selfie Day! You’ll probably be safe with a food selfie, so celebrate Peaches ‘N’ Cream Day.

Hooray for Daylight

Today is Daylight Appreciation Day, so make the most of your daylight hours. Start by celebrating Go Skateboarding Day. Check out a skate park, and don’t forget your helmet! If you want to upgrade to something faster, it’s also World Motorcycle Day. Finish with some stretches, for International Yoga Day.

High Jumper

Stand up and jump. How high did you get? Could you jump onto a chair, or a table? Now try it with only one leg. The world record for highest standing jump on one leg, was set by Harinder Sekhon, when he made a vertical leap of 4 feet, 6.49 inches! He’d be great at leapfrog.

The Longest Day

In the Northern Hemisphere, today is the longest day of the year, known as the summer solstice. At the North Pole, the sun will be shining for 24 hours! In Earth’s Southern Hemisphere, however, today is the winter solstice, with the fewest daylight hours. The South Pole won’t see the sun at all!

Bald and Proud

For American Eagle Day, let’s learn about the bald eagle. The North American birds get their distinctive white-feathered heads around age 5. They pair up for life, and work on the same nest every year. The largest nest was 20 feet deep and nearly 10 feet wide. That would be roomy enough for their 7 foot wingspan!

Go Shelling With Dad

Happy Father’s Day! Don’t forget to say thanks to your dad, and all the men in your life that help raise you. Maybe you can take him to the beach, to celebrate Seashell Day. You can find the most shells around low tide, especially after a storm. Leave the ones that are still alive!

Treats and Geeks

You’ve been sitting in the dark too long. Back away from the computer and video games, and go for a walk outside. It’s Hike With A Geek Day! Afterwards, have a nice cold milkshake, or maybe a chocolate soda. It’s Vanilla Milkshake Day, and Ice Cream Soda Day! Yummy!
