Walmart Welcomes Butterflies and Bees

Walmart is taking steps to protect pollinators, like bees and butterflies. They’re encouraging their fresh food suppliers, to stop using harmful pesticides, and restore pollinator habitats. Their garden centers will feature more plants that attract pollinators. Walmart has also announced plans to protect or manage 50,000,000 acres of land, and 1,000,000 square miles of ocean, by 20 30.

What if after you ate a loaf of bread, you could eat the packaging too? Scientists in India and Russia, have developed an edible food wrap, made from algae. By researching the film that forms naturally in brown algae, they’ve found the perfect way to get rid of wasteful plastic packaging.

Helicopter Flies on Mars

For the first time in history, NASA achieved the controlled flight of a powered aircraft, in the atmosphere of another planet. The Ingenuity helicopter lifted off early this morning. NASA will have more details about the drone’s historic flight later today, on Mars.NASA.gov, where you can watch it in action.

Truck drivers need to be prepared, for all obstacles on the road. A driver in North Carolina, even encountered a flying fish. The truck’s dashboard camera captured the moment, when a bird flying the opposite direction, dropped a fish onto the windshield. No damage was done, except to the bird’s dinner.

Gnomes Are in Hiding

Garden stores in Britain, are running short on gnomes. The lawn ornament shortage, is partly because of the recent Suez Canal blockage, but gnomes have been hard to find for months now. During the pandemic, people have been spending more time in their gardens, and bought all the gnomes to keep them company.

Fireballs in the Sky

Look up in the sky this week, and you’ll have a good chance of spotting a shooting star. As Earth passes through a comet’s debris field, bits of rock burn up in the atmosphere, causing meteor showers. The Lyrid meteor showers will be clearest, looking east in a pre-dawn sky.

Starship Will Carry Humans to Moon

NASA announced that SpaceX was chosen, for the Artemis mission taking astronauts back to the Moon. The reusable Starship spacecraft, will carry crew members to the lunar surface, where they’ll spend a week. The trip is still a few years away. Humans have not landed on the Moon since 1972, during the Apollo program.

Today is Pet Owners Independence Day. On this wacky holiday, people are supposed to switch places with their pets. You can lay around and get fed, while your pet goes to work or school, and scoops up your poop. Also, eat animal crackers, for Animal Crackers Day. Maybe your pets should eat people crackers!
