Today we celebrate Umbrella Day. The umbrella, or bumbershoot, has been around for over 4000 years, but the Chinese were the first, to waterproof paper parasols. Folding umbrellas didn’t show up until 1969. There’s an umbrella shop in London, called James Smith and Sons, that opened in 1830! After 189 years, they must be umbrella experts!

A spinning asteroid would be able to create gravity, so why not build a space station inside of it! Scientists are exploring the idea, as a way to mine the valuable minerals locked in asteroids. The asteroid’s rocky shell, would protect mining operations from cosmic ray radiation. Someday, people could live and work there!

A cat in Montana just used up one of its 9 lives. Fluffy went outside when it was only 8° Fahrenheit, and it snowed 16 inches. Her horrified humans found her buried in a snow bank, and rushed the poor kitty to the vet. After hours of treatment, Fluffy revived, and is back to her old self!

Female mosquitoes have big appetites. They need the proteins in blood, to produce eggs. Researchers decided to see if giving mosquitoes appetite suppressants, would make a difference. They reacted as if they’d just had a meal, and didn’t bite anyone. Basically, they gave mosquitoes diet pills, and it actually worked! No idea’s too crazy!

She submerges her art into the sea, which has an extremely high salt content, for months. The salt crystallizes on her work, creating a sparkling collaboration, between human and nature.

Get ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count! Next Weekend, from February 15th through the 18th, spend at least 15 minutes and count all the birds you see. Then report your sightings online, at birdcount.org. You’ll be helping researchers learn how birds are doing, and how to protect them and their environment. Good job!

At Americas High School in El Paso Texas, there is a welding team. They are making news because it’s the school’s first all-female team! Since Veronica Garcia started teaching the welding class, more girls began joining. The welding industry is dominated by males, so seeing a female team at competitions will be inspiring!
