A Hawaiian family was swimming near Lanai, when they discovered a whale shark entangled in a fishing net. Joby Rohrer dove 50 feet down 5 times, to cut the 150 pound rope away bit by bit. The whale shark remained calm throughout the 45 minute process! Joby’s daughter towed the rope to shore to prevent any more harm.

The biggest supermarket chain in the United States, Kroger, is going to get rid of plastic grocery bags. Starting with the Pacific Northwest in 2019, they will phase out single-use bags by 2025 in all Kroger, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, and Ralphs stores, eliminating 6 billion plastic bags per year. Scientists have found a fossilized baby horse in Siberia. The foal is nearly perfect, looking like it could be sleeping. It was only 2 to 3 months old when it died in the Paleolithic period, 30 to 40,000 years ago. The permafrost in Siberia always stays below freezing, perfectly preserving and mummifying specimens.

Scientists in Mexico found that birds were actually using cigarette butts to repel parasitic ticks! Studying house finches, they found the birds added butts only to nests with live ticks. Parley for the Oceans, an ocean conservation group, partnered with Adidas to produce the shirts from recycled materials! The yarn was made from fishing nets and other plastics collected from the ocean. That’s creative recycling!
