The New York University School of Medicine announced this week, that it would give free tuition to all M.D students! This will save students over $55,000 per year, and help them focus on becoming outstanding doctors. NYU hopes it will inspire more people to become physicians, if they can eliminate medical school costs.

Researchers are exploring a new idea to help prevent earthquake damage, and recycle at the same time. They believe soil mixed with rubber pieces from old tires, could be an effective foundation for buildings. If the rubber can reduce the seismic vibrations, buildings would be less likely to collapse!

It’s International Orangutan Day, celebrating the expressive orange-haired apes. They are an endangered species, found only in Borneo and Sumatra. While orangutans grow only about 5 feet tall, their arm span can reach 7 feet from tip to tip! Palm oil plantations are the biggest threat to the wild population, destroying their rainforest homes.

The perfect thing to do today would be, to fly around in a little plane, taking pictures of potato fields, with bows in your hair. That’s because it’s International Bow Day, World Photography Day, National Potato Day, and Aviation Day. At the very least, spoon mashed potatoes into your mouth like an airplane!

The Belgrade Zoo in Serbia opened in 1936. One year later, a 2 year-old American alligator from Germany, named Muja, joined their population. 81 years later, Muja is still living there, and in good health! He survived multiple bombings during the second World War, but now enjoys lounging around, eating quail and rats.

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the St. Louis Chess Club erected the world’s biggest chess piece. Missouri’s World Chess Hall of Fame built the 20 foot tall king, sculpted from mahogany. There are no plans to make a complete set that big. The board would have to be 80 feet long!

Teachers in one Kentucky school district started the school year with a nice surprise. An anonymous woman had given each of the 143 teachers in Pendleton County $100 to buy supplies. She said that teachers “give so much more than they are compensated,” and wanted to support them. Teachers are the best!

Sometimes the food on tv looks good enough to eat. When one dog owner pressed pause during an advertisement for pizza, their Weimaraner, Po D’Arroz, decided to give it a taste test. He was licking each giant pepperoni on the pizza, and looking supremely disappointed that it tasted so bland.

Tang recently set a world record in China by inflating 12 tires at once, through his nostril! He spent years practicing martial arts and qigong, developing his breathing technique.
