That Robot Just Popped

What amazing substance grows 10 times bigger with extreme force, when heated? Popcorn! Scientists are creating simple robots powered by popcorn. Instead of pumps and compressors, kernels would expand when voltage is applied, and shrink when popped kernels dissolve in water. Popcorn power would be good for jumping robots, or maybe edible ones!

In the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

A new dinosaur was recently discovered in China. The amazing dragon from Lingwu, or Lingwulong shenqui, is a neosauropod, a long-necked plant eater. Paleontologists were surprised to find the 174 million year-old fossils in East Asia, because it was believed that area was cut off by Jurassic seaways. It’s 15 million years older than previously known neosauropods!

The Pipes Are Calling

If you’re near Orangeburg New York today, you might see world record-making in progress! The Ceol Mor Festival will attempt to gather at least 334 bagpipers together to play the same song, and become bagpiping capital of the world.  The festival also hosts competitions for pipe and drum bands and soloists.

Swine Security System

Burglars broke into a house in Indiana, but left in a hurry without taking anything. They probably got scared off by Dumplin, a really big pig! There had been 3 other break-ins around the neighborhood, but weren’t lucky enough to have a guard pig. Dumplin’s human adopted him earlier this year.

Martian Habitat Contest

A few years ago, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration held a contest, to design a Mars habitat that could be 3-D printed. NASA narrowed it down to 5 designs, and now the teams will actually print a 1/3 scale model. The winner will win $100,000, and perhaps the distinction of designing the first Martian architecture.

It’s finally here: Hooray For Kids Day! Baby goats are so cute! Just kidding; young humans, this day is for you! It’s also National Chocolate Chip Cookie, Sandcastle, Doll, and Mustard Day. Take your doll to the beach, to build castles and eat mustard-covered chocolate chip cookies. They’ll be delicious. Really!

Tons of Cheese, Literally

Wisconsin is famous for its cheese, and now the state also holds the world record for the largest cheeseboard. The board was 7 feet wide, 35 feet long, and covered with 4,437 pounds of cheese! A 2000 pound wheel of cheddar was the centerpiece, surrounded by 125 different varieties of cheese. I wonder how many people cut the cheese?

More Craters on the Moon

Did you know there’s a program, dedicated to studying things that hit the moon? The Moon Impacts Detection and Analysis System, called Midas for short, studies meteoroids that collide with the moon. They use observatories, to watch for flashes on the lunar surface. They recorded 2 impacts in less than 24 hours last month!
