Today we celebrate Native American Heritage Day. They were the original inhabitants, of the land that became the United States. Native Americans helped the European settlers survive, but they were not treated kindly in return. It’s important to learn the history of their mistreatment, and honor the accomplishments and traditions of indigenous people.

Because yesterday was Thanksgiving Day, today is You’re Welcome Giving Day. It’s the polite thing to do! Plan your lunch: it’s Maize Day, the original name for corn. Since it’s Sinkie Day, eat over the sink, and you’ll have nothing to clean up! Finally, floss the kernels out of your teeth. It’s Flossing Day!

In the United States, the day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday. It’s when many people start holiday shopping, and stores have big sales. If the crowds are too much for you, celebrate Buy Nothing Day instead. Some people even organize Zombie walks, wandering blankly around stores, filling their baskets with nothing!

Researchers in Sweden have confirmed that a puppy found in Siberia last year, is 18,000 years old! The Ice-Age puppy was discovered in a tunnel in the permafrost. The well-preserved animal could be a very early dog, or a late Pleistocene wolf. They’re not sure, because it comes from the time when wolves were domesticated.

One night 5 years ago, Victor Usov’s cat Sasha, disappeared from his home in Oregon. Last week, he got a call from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. His cat had been found, 1400 miles away! They were able to track him down because his cat had been microchipped. Sasha got a free plane ride home!

Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist, who is the Princess of Polka Dots. Her paintings and sculptures, and even her clothes, feature lots of dots. Today at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, the 90-year-old will have a 3-story tall balloon floating down the avenue! Watch for the polka dotted orange sun.

Get ready to get crafty. It’s Make Your Own Head Day! You could draw a big paper head, sculpt a little clay head, or make a papier-mâché head using a balloon. It’s also Red Planet Day. The planet Mars is red because the surface is full of iron oxide. It’s rusty!

Today in the United States, it’s Thanksgiving Day. In 1621, in Plymouth Massachusetts, English colonists and the Wampanoag people, who had helped the colonists survive the winter, celebrated with a harvest feast that lasted several days. The Native Americans had taught them to grow corn, squash and beans. Maybe you’ll eat some today. Happy Thanksgiving!

Workers were doing some renovations at Montclair State University in New Jersey, when they heard the sound of breaking glass in the wall. They had discovered a bottle with a note in it! The original bricklayers, William Hanley and James Lennon, had written their names on the note 112 years ago, to leave their mark!

Tony Fisher decided it wasn’t a big enough challenge, to solve a Rubik’s cube. The British man created the world’s largest Rubik’s cube puzzle, that stands 6 feet 8 inches tall! He also holds the record for the smallest cube, at 5.5 mm tall. The giant cube does turn, but won’t be winning any speed records!
