February Gets Shortchanged

Poor February… When King Numa Pompilius added January and February to the first Roman 10-month calendar, he altered all the months to have a lucky odd number of days. February, a month honoring the dead, became the unlucky month with 28 days. The calendar changed through the years, but February never got any more days.

Okay, Nutella fans, here’s your chance to witness a world record! In Sydney Australia tomorrow, a line of pancakes covered in Nutella hazelnut spread will form a giant heart. They hope it will be the longest line of pancakes at over 164 feet long. If you are there, you can help eat it all up!

Another New State of Matter

Scientists have discovered another new state of matter. The commonly observable forms are liquid, solid, gas, and plasma. The newest discovery is Rydberg polarons, occurring only in ultra-cold temperatures. It’s when one of an atom’s electrons orbits far enough from the nucleus that another atom fits inside the orbit.

Celebrate Polar Bears

It’s International Polar Bear Day! Polar bears have black skin and hollow transparent hairs that scatter light, making their fur look white! They can grow 9 feet tall and have paws one foot wide. They live in Arctic sea ice regions, so climate change and melting ice has caused polar bears to become endangered.
