556 Presidents’ Day

In honor of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, students at Lincoln Elementary School in Louisville Kentucky set a new world record. 556 people donned stovepipe hats and black paper beards to become the largest group to dress as Abe Lincoln. What a nice 209th birthday present for Honest Abe!

Happy Year of the Dog!

Xīn nián kuài lè! That means “Have a happy new year” in Chinese, because the Chinese New Year starts today. This is the Year of the Dog. The Spring Festival begins 15 days of parties, fireworks, feasts and parades. It’s traditional to wear red and avoid sweeping; you’ll sweep out good luck the new year brought!

Hippos and Gumdrops

Today is Hippo Day. Hippopotamuses are quite dangerous animals, killing around 3000 people each year! These water loving pachyderms can’t swim. They mark territory by flinging poop with their tails. They produce pink milk, which reminds me: it’s also National Gumdrop Day! Percy Truesdell was the Gumdrop King, perfecting the candy in 1915.

Snowball in a Can

One of the coolest souvenirs for sale in Minneapolis during the Super Bowl was snow. The ad agency space150 sold snowballs in a vending machine! For one dollar, you’d get a see-through can with a handmade Minnesota snowball in it, and the money was donated to the Wilderness Inquiry organization.
