Inspiring Barbie Dolls

Mattel announced its next dolls for Barbie’s Inspiring Women Series. Figures of Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks, and astronaut Sally Ride will join mathematician Katherine Johnson, artist Frida Kahlo, and pilot Amelia Earhart, in the series. Mattel chooses female role models, “who took risks and paved the way for the next generation.”

Computer Celebrates Her Birthday

Yesterday, Katherine Johnson turned 101. The retired mathematician worked for NASA as a human computer. She calculated orbital equations for the trajectories of Apollo and Friendship missions by hand! As an African-American woman, she was a pioneer in the space program, and continues to be an inspiring role-model with her book, “Reaching for the Moon.”
