Calling All Birds

It’s rare to see a payphone in the United States anymore, but a new one was installed in Takoma Park Maryland. If you try to make a phone call, you’ll be surprised to hear bird calls instead! Musician David Schulman created the art installation. Each button plays the sound of a different local bird.

Slow Down for Turtles

West Lafayette Indiana is full of small ponds, and turtles are often seen trying to get to them, by crossing dangerous streets. 8-year-old Jack Wietbrock wrote a letter to the mayor, asking him to put up Turtle Crossing signs to help keep them safe. The mayor agreed to install signs, thanks to Jack!

Bees are essential to pollinate crops, but honey bee populations have been declining. You can help the honey bees by planting more flowers, setting out water for them, and not using pesticides. Or start a beehive! Say thank you to a bee today, for World Honey Bee Day!

Black Cats and Used Hats

Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day. Black cats are least likely to be adopted. One ridiculous reason is that they’re not as photogenic! Consider giving a black kitty a good home. It’s also National Thrift Shop Day. Be good to the Earth, and reuse what other people no longer need. Plus, it’s a bargain!

Calling All Robots

If you like robotics, here’s a challenge for you. The NASA Space Robotics Challenge is looking for autonomous robot designs, that can explore the Moon’s surface. The top design will win up to $1,000,000 to continue research! Anyone can enter the competition, which will occur in a virtual environment using special software.
