Rottnest Island in Australia, has become a popular destination for people to take selfies. That’s because it’s home to adorable quokkas! The marsupial is related to the wallaby. Quokkas  are friendly, so while tourists should not touch them, it’s encouraged to take pictures with them. It raises awareness of the vulnerable species.

Did Someone Say Wish?

The Perseid meteor showers will hit their peak tomorrow. Earth passes through the comet Swift/Tuttle’s tail, and bits of the comet burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, creating blazing meteors. Because of the full moon, only 15 to 20 shooting stars per hour, will be visible. Most Perseid meteors are tiny, weighing only as much as a paperclip.

Corals Working on a Comeback

The Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain, a mostly-underwater mountain range, had been devastated by overfishing and trawling with nets. Many deep-sea corals were destroyed, and the whole area was put under protection. The federal protection is working; the corals are finally starting to come back, and will hopefully become a thriving ecological habitat again.

Bread Like Mummy Used to Make

I’ve heard of ancient grains bread, but a gastroegyptologist took things literally. Seamus Blackley used yeast from 4500-year-old Egyptian vessels, to bake bread! Microbiologist Richard Bowman injected a nutrient solution into the ceramic vessels to reactivate the yeast, then extracted the liquid. The resulting bread was like sourdough, but sweeter.

Happy Sailing

A sailor aboard the Sulak, a Russian boat from the Soviet Far East fishing fleet, sent a message in a bottle on June 20, 1969. 50 years later, a man in Alaska found it! The note said, “We wish you good health, many years of life and happy sailing.” Some wishes never get old!

Crabby Neighbors

Everyone in Abriel Arnel’s neighborhood is crabby. She was surprised to find several visitors outside her front door. The Florida woman posted a video of her street, swarming with blue crabs! The land crabs usually live in burrows, coming out during the rainy season when their tunnels flood.
