Amelia Earhart, Aviator

Today is Amelia Earhart Day. She was the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, in 1932. In 1937, she planned to fly around the world. She completed 22,000 miles, but disappeared without a trace somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. Amelia Earhart’s writings continue to inspire people today. “Adventure is worthwhile in itself.”

50 Years Since Splashdown

50 years ago, the Apollo 11 astronauts returned to Earth. Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong came home in the Command Module Columbia. Slowed down by 3 parachutes, they splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, and helicopters from the USS Hornet picked them up. They then spent 3 weeks in quarantine, in case of hazardous moon germs!

Hyperloop Speeds Up

Students at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, just set a new Hyperloop speed record. Hyperloop is a type of travel, where a pod shoots through a sealed tunnel, using magnetic levitation. The team’s pod maintained 288 miles-per-hour! The goal for a full-sized Hyperloop is 745 miles-per-hour, so there’s lots of room for improvement!

New Way to Get Around Nature

Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, is the first U.S. National Park to offer the use of heavy-duty wheelchairs. The track chair is a wheelchair with treads, that can operate on the steep sandy trails. Visitors with disabilities can reserve the chair in advance. Hopefully, more parks will also get track chairs!

Tree-Planting Drones Work

Last September, drones flew around Myanmar, firing seed missiles into the ground. Those seeds have sprouted into thousands of mangrove trees, already 20 inches high! 2 operators can pilot a fleet of drones, that plant 400,000 trees a day. Since the barren spots of Myanmar could hold 1,000,000,000 trees, re-foresting the country using drones will really save time!

Condors Making a Comeback

California condors used to be on the verge of extinction. Conservation efforts to save North America’s largest bird, included rounding up the last 24 birds, and breeding them in captivity. Over 300 condors now live in the wild, and the 1000th chick just hatched! It will grow up to have a 10-foot wingspan.
