Today is Mandela Day, in honor of Nelson Mandela. The former President of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner, spent his life fighting racial discrimination and segregation, called apartheid. Mandela was South Africa’s first black president, winning the first democratic election after apartheid ended. He was born on this date, 101 years ago.

Kim Draper received a postcard in the mail, meant for someone else. It had the correct name and address, but the postcard had been mailed exactly 26 years earlier! Kim hopes to find Leena and Muhammad Ali Kizilbash, to deliver the postcard in person. It described travels in Hong Kong, and was signed, “Your Dad.”

A rooftop TV antenna in Wales, appeared to be getting an adjustment by a seagull. It turns out, the poor seagull was impaled on the antenna! Whitechurch firefighters rescued the bird, and took him to a wildlife specialist. He’s recovering nicely, and will soon be returned to the wild. No more TV, Mr. Seagull!

A huge Neolithic city is being unearthed near Jerusalem. The 10,000 year-old site is the largest Stone Age excavation in the Middle East. Archaeologists had already been excavating the area for 18 months, but a recent highway project revealed that the city was much bigger than they thought. It will keep them busy for years!

Air New Zealand wants to keep plastic out of landfills and oceans, by keeping single-use plastics out of the skies. The airline will begin using plant-based cups and reusable dishes instead of sauce packets. The changes will cut out 55,000,000 pieces of plastic, and reduce Air New Zealand’s carbon footprint by 10.3 million pounds per year.

Tropical Storm Barry has been flooding Louisiana, but the fire ants know how to stay safe. They use teamwork, to form a giant raft! Researchers have found that the rafts are strong enough to withstand waves, and can break apart and reform as needed. The ants hang onto each other with jaws and claws.
