Stay Off That Raft

Tropical Storm Barry has been flooding Louisiana, but the fire ants know how to stay safe. They use teamwork, to form a giant raft! Researchers have found that the rafts are strong enough to withstand waves, and can break apart and reform as needed. The ants hang onto each other with jaws and claws.

Barrel jellyfish are huge, and a massive one was just spotted off the coast of Cornwall England. Biologist Lizzie Daly was diving near Falmouth, and came upon a jellyfish that was bigger than her! There was no need to be scared, because barrel jellyfish cannot sting through human skin, although they could cause a rash!

Today is World Snake Day. Have you ever touched a snake’s smooth scaly skin? The longest snake species is the reticulated python, and Medusa is the longest snake, at 25 feet long. Dozens of people could touch her at once! The longest threadsnake was only 4 inches long, and the width of a spaghetti noodle.

Today is Fresh Spinach Day! Eat a spinach salad, or roll the leaves up and eat them like a carrot. It’s also Guinea Pig Appreciation Day. Give your furry pet lots of love, but only feed them spinach once a week. Guinea pigs are rodents, with individual personalities. They’re great pets, but need lots of space!

Wild bees pollinate 80% of all the crops on Earth, but diseases and harmful pesticides are killing off bee colonies. California will soon protect 4 bumble bee species, under the Endangered Species Act. Protecting bees from extinction will also prevent the plants we eat, from disappearing. Growing clover and dandelions instead of grass, can actually help!
