Today is West Virginia Day. When Virginia seceded from the United States during the Civil War, the western part refused to leave to join the Confederates. They remained and formed a new state instead! West Virginia is covered in mountains. If they were all flattened out, the state would be the size of Texas!

A family in Florida has a pooch to thank, for saving their home. Amber Walker couldn’t sleep because her dog, Angel, was acting so agitated. Amber finally went to the window to see what was upsetting Angel. There were flames coming from their neighbor’s garage! Thanks to Angel, no one was hurt. Good dog!

Researchers in Switzerland, did an experiment, to see if the bacteria in cheese, had musical taste. They aged wheels of Emmental cheese in a cellar, for 6 months. Each cheese, was hit with soundwaves from a different song. The cheese that listened to classical music tasted milder, and the hip-hop cheese had the funkiest flavor!

A British man, Stephen Mckears, thought he was going mad. Small objects kept moving around in his shed overnight, and ending up organized in a plastic container. Was a ghost cleaning up? He and his friend, Rodney Holbrook, made a mess, and set up a video camera. A little mouse tidied it all up!

A solar farm in Antarctica, had an official visitor. The Australian Antarctic Division activated 105 solar panels, and monitor them by video. They caught footage of a penguin visiting the farm, and appearing to inspect the equipment. I guess everything was in proper order, because Inspector Penguin eventually wandered away.

A stray dog tagged along with Don Wargowsky and a group of mountain-climbers, to the top of Mount Baruntse, in Nepal. The dog, nicknamed Mera, climbed over 23,000 feet without protection for her paws, and almost no help from the humans she was following. It’s likely a world record, but Mera’s just happy with treats!
