Protecting the Unknown

Scientists have discovered more than 100 new species, among the submerged mountains off the coast of Tasmania. In only 4 weeks, they observed previously unknown types of coral and brittle stars, crabs and lobsters, blob fish and worms. The researchers were studying how well coral reefs were recovering, after becoming a protected area 20 years ago.

76 year-old Paul Goetchius is a retired environmental toxicologist, but he’s taken on a new job. He volunteers with the On Point for College program, and drives low-income college students to class. He’s driven over 64,000 miles in the last 8 years, helping countless students complete their college education, and being their honorary Grandpa!

City Embraces a Weed

Alyssa Emrick was driving through Toledo Ohio, when she noticed a giant weed growing in the sidewalk. Thinking it looked like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree, her family added a few ornaments. Other people started adding decorations to the Toledo Christmas Weed, as well as placing toy and food donations underneath. Everyone loves it!

Twinkling Gemstone Planets

Astronomers have discovered a new class of planets. They orbit their stars at a much closer distance, than Earth orbits the Sun. Researchers think the planets could be covered in rubies and sapphires! Between those gemstone-covered planets, and the possibility that it rains diamonds on Neptune, stars aren’t the only sparkly things in space!

Travel for 2 Cents a Mile

14 students from the University of New South Wales, designed a solar-powered car that operates on a college student’s budget. It drove 2500 miles across Australia in 6 days, using only $50 worth of energy! When the vehicle, nicknamed Violet, travels at 37 miles per hour, it uses the same amount of energy as a toaster!

That Fire is Hissing

Firefighters in Texas had to save over 100 snakes and lizards from a house fire over the weekend. The snakes were in glass cases, so they had to carry them out, looking like a scene from the Pee-wee’s Big Adventure movie! The fire did lots of damage, but the awesome firefighters saved every animal!
