Super Long Distance Mistakes

Oops! Andre Kuipers, a Dutch astronaut on the International Space Station, accidentally dialed 9-1-1 while making a call from outer space. He set off an alarm at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, but no emergency vehicles were dispatched. A few years ago, a British astronaut dialed a wrong number, and asked for planet Earth.

A woman in Great Britain is looking for her lost pet. Have you seen him? His name is Dave, and he’s a goldfish. Someone started a facebook page called Finding Davo, and posters are appearing around Swindon, where the fish mysteriously disappeared. Hopefully, he’s on a great adventure!

Drive on Recycled Plastic

There’s a use for recycled bottles that could circle the Earth. MacRebur’s recycles plastic into pellets, that are mixed into the asphalt used to pave roads! Right now, an ingredient called bitumen is used, but that’s made from fossil fuels. Adding plastic reduces the need for bitumen, and makes longer-lasting roads!

Today is Apple Tree Day, which started as a celebration of a nearly 200 year-old tree. Eat an apple, and also eat a bean for Bean Day! Do you like green beans, black beans, kidney beans, or lima beans? Eat them all in 15 bean soup! It’s also Shortbread Day, so eat shortbread cookies for dessert!

This year, 6 eclipses will be visible around the world. The first one will occur tonight, for people who live in northeast Asia or the North Pacific. You can brave temperatures around negative 60 degrees Fahrenheit, to see the greatest point of eclipse in Russia, near the Pole of Cold, Earth’s coldest permanently inhabited spot.

Can You Name 18,000 Birds?

Today is National Bird Day. There are around 18,000 different bird species! The largest non-flying bird is the ostrich, the kori bustard is the biggest that can fly, and the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan at up to 11 feet! The bee hummingbird is smallest at 2 1/4 inches long. The Australian lyrebird sounds like R2-D2!
