Scientists have observed a phenomenon they never noticed before: a double whirlpool. Whirlpools in the ocean, called eddies, can stretch hundreds of miles across. Satellite imagery revealed that eddies flowing in opposite directions were actually linked all the way across the Tasman Sea. Connected eddies called modons may form when whirlpools collide.

The Thompson family adopted Pilot the kitten in 2004. He disappeared three years later and the Thompsons moved from California to Colorado in 2010. Adam Kirby and his friends Jim and Alisdair had quite a catch when they went fishing near Pawleys Island, South Carolina. They caught the biggest Black Drum fish ever recorded! Large specimens of the saltwater fish sometimes top 90 pounds, but this one weighed 122 pounds! The fish was released back into the wild.

Three meerkat pups were born at a Florida zoo. The triplets were named Vixen, Comet and Cupid after Santa’s reindeer. They are still hiding out in their burrow with their parents, Cashew and Kirabo. Meerkats are found in the grasslands of southern Africa and live in social groups called mobs.

A fossilized skull of a Siberian Unicorn was found in Kazakhstan! Earlier fossils were 350,000 years old, but this unicorn lived only 29,000 years ago. The Siberian unicorn, or Elasmotherium sibiricum looked like a 6 foot tall rhino with shaggy fur like a woolly mammoth and a long, slender horn coming out of its head.
