Tessellations are geometric patterns with no gaps, where the same shapes are repeated over and over again. It’s Tessellation Day! You can find tessellations in nature, like honeycombs, or in sports, like on your soccer ball. Make one of your own out of pieces of fudge, because it’s also National Fudge Day!

Fly a Kite and Flip a Flop

It’s National Flip Flop Day, and Tropical Smoothie Cafe will give you a free sunshine smoothie, from 2-7 pm, if you wear flip flop sandals. Then enjoy Fly A Kite Day, to remember the date in 1752, when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm to prove that lightning was an electrical discharge. What a shocking discovery!

It’s Raining Gems!

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano continues to erupt and has destroyed many homes, but it’s also making gemstones fall from the sky! Olivine minerals are normally embedded inside basalt. When lava shoots into the air, the green gems separate and fall to the ground as peridot crystals. Volcanoes are nature’s jewelers!

What a Good Boy!

Kaylyn Marie got locked out of her house when a wooden rod used to hold the patio door closed, fell back into place. But she coaxed Sam, her 8 year-old golden retriever, to remove the rod so she could get back in! She was so happy, she promised him a swim in the pool and 10,000 treats!
