This week it snowed in Hawaii! Mauna Kea, the highest peak on Hawaii’s Big Island, got up to 8 inches of snow. It is more common for the volcanic peaks to get snow than you would think. Mauna Kea actually means White Mountain. I can’t wait to go sledding down a volcano!

Scientists unearthed 215 fossilized pterosaur eggs in China, including 16 that contained preserved embryos. Pterosaurs were flying vertebrates that lived 120 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. Researchers think the soft-shelled 3 inch long eggs were so well preserved because a flood washed them into the bottom of a lake.

Studies have shown that when kids spend more time outside, it may lessen the chances of needing glasses! Myopia is nearsightedness, when you can see things up close but need glasses to see things far away. Sunlight, dopamine, vitamin D, and exercise might prevent myopia, even if your parents wear glasses! Now go out and play!

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th. That means this year’s hurricane season is finally over! After 10 hurricanes in a row, this was one of the most devastating years ever and many people are still rebuilding. At least they don’t get much snow that far south!

Last year, 12 year-old Syrafina Mohammed became the youngest person to run a 13 mile half marathon in all 50 states. 9 year-old Aiden Jaquez wants to break that record! He plans to finish the 50 States Half Marathon Challenge by the time he’s 11. But Syrafina’s second record will still stand. She did it in less than a year!

Christmas decorations are causing traffic jams! A family in Connecticut decorated their house with 350,000 Christmas lights, bringing thousands of visitors who disrupted the neighborhood. After neighbors complained, the Halliwells limited the display hours and got police help to direct traffic, and everyone was happier. It’s so nice when people compromise!

In Bali, which is an Indonesian island, Mount Agung has been erupting for the first time in 50 years. It is spewing clouds of ash more than five miles high. Nearby residents are evacuating before an even bigger eruption happens.

Do you know what CRISPR is? It’s not how you like your potato chips! It’s an acronym for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, which is a family of DNA sequences in bacteria. Scientists just used CRISPR to turn E-coli bacteria into miniature tape recorders! This method of recording information is a new way to use bacteria to diagnose diseases!

30 new species have been discovered in the Amazon. The Kaieteur National Park in Guyana is home to six new species of fish, three new plants, fifteen new aquatic beetles, five new odonates (which are like dragonflies and damselflies), and one big spider. A blue tarantula! At least he will be easy to spot!

Giving Tuesday is a good time to tell you about ways kids have raised money for charity. 8 year-olds Max Chwatko and Alex Travis started charging a nickel a joke to raise money for cancer research and have raised $30,000! But the Comedy Kids can’t top Charlie Simpson. The 7 year-old raised $240,000 for Haiti after the earthquake in 2010 by riding his bike 5 miles!
