The Sierra Nevada Mountain range expanded a bit after a prolonged drought. They grew an inch taller! Water weight causes the Earth to sag. The four-year drought in California allowed water to drain through cracks deep into the earth below. Losing water weight causes elastic rebound, when the mountains rise to original elevations.

Over the last four years, sea star wasting syndrome caused millions of starfish to turn into blobs of goo. The mysterious virus infected many species of stars from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska. Luckily, sea star populations in Oregon and California are making a comeback with a starfish baby boom!

A company called Zipline is using drones to save lives. Its drones make deliveries to remote hospitals in Rwanda. The tiny aircraft travels at 60 miles per hour and drops blood or other medical supplies by parachute, cutting hours off delivery time. The drone service is expanding to Tanzania to save even more lives.

To welcome in the new year, the tallest building in the world had the biggest light show in the world. Burj Khalifa, a skyscraper in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, became a canvas for a dazzling laser light show. The “Light Up 2018” display covered 27 acres, or about 20 football fields!

The Quadrantids meteor shower will be most visible tonight. The meteors are caused by space debris from a metallic asteroid called 2003 E H 1. Because of the nearly full moon, the meteors will be harder to see. They will peak earlier in the evening but you can watch them all night long.
