Scientists identified several species of caterpillars that eat and digest the plastic. The bacteria in their gut was breaking it down. In India, a near complete fossil of a giant ‘lizard fish’ was unearthed. The fishlike reptile, Ichthyosaur, is from the Jurassic period and was an estimated 18 feet long. Others were found in other parts of the world, starting in England in 1834, but this is the first time one has been found in India.

Officials in Maine said that a new species of wasp has been discovered. University of Maine student Hillary Morin Peterson discovered a small non-stinging wasp species while conducting work for her thesis. She named the wasp Ormocerus dirigoius.

Teenager Andrew Young, Jr., is one of five finalists in a nationwide invention contest. His idea is a Toaster Shooter that shoots toast out onto your plate so you don’t have to reach in there and burn yourself. The winner of the contest will get $250,000. Wow! With that I am sure he can buy a lot of bread.

Christian Thomas, at age 9, just became the youngest hiker to complete the three trails that make up the Triple Crown of United States hiking. Since the age of 5 he has hiked nearly 8000 miles! Congratulations Christian!

A Great Pyrenees dog named Odin is being credited with saving eight goats from flames in the California fires last month by staying behind and herding them to safety. Several small orphaned deer had also found their way to Odin and remained safe under his care. What a great pet!

Amelia Fox, who goes to school in Australia, will be heading to NASA as her prize for winning a national invention contest by creating a wheelchair attachment that allows you to easily lift someone out of the chair during transfer. This was inspired by watching her parents struggle to transfer her brother Jake when he came out of surgery. Great thinking!

Abram, a 4th grader in Michigan, received a lifetime membership award as the Youth Innovator of the Year for 2017 by the Grand Rapids Inventors Network. During a heat wave, Abram got the idea to make an air conditioner that would cool his classmates. Using a Rubbermaid tub, frozen water bottles, a towel and a fan, he was able to lower the temperature of the room by several degrees. What a cool invention!
