The stores are full of Halloween candy, but you don’t have to wait that long, to satisfy your sweet tooth. Today is Sweetest Day! Created by a candy company more than 100 years ago, it inspired people to give out boxes of candy, and make it the sweetest day of the year!

A team of scientists recently discovered 7 new species of frog, in the jungles of Madagascar. The frogs made noises that reminded the team of science fiction sound effects, so they named them after Star Trek characters. Captains Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Archer, Pike, and Burnham, are now immortalized by frogs with spacey calls.

The Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, in California, is the Super Bowl of Pumpkins. The heaviest pumpkin in North America, named Rudy, won this year’s contest. The new Pumpkin King of Half Moon Bay weighed 2,471 pounds! Travis Gienger traveled 35 hours from Minnesota, refreshing his pumpkin with buckets of water along the way.

Raking the leaves into a big pile and jumping into it, is loads of fun. But be sure to leave some patches of leaves for the bugs, too. Many insects like moths, butterflies, and fireflies, overwinter in leaves. Dead leaves also make good mulch for the lawn, so leave them alone. Enjoy the mess!
