I Spy a Glass Planet

Josh Simpson has hidden his artwork around the world for 40 years. The artist makes colorful glass planets, and hides them for people to find. He was inspired by the first photos of Earth taken from space, back in 19 70. So far, he’s created more than 3,000 beautiful Infinity Planets. Maybe you’ll find one someday!

Bring Your Own Straw

Today is Drinking Straw Day, but modern plastic straws can harm the environment and wildlife. Paper straws were invented in 1888 by Marvin Stone. Ancient Sumerians were using gold straws to drink beer 5000 years ago! Argentinians use metal straws that end in sieves called bombillas. Invest in a reusable steel or bamboo straw to celebrate!

Trapped in Tumbleweeds

Roads close down because of snowstorms, floods, or even melted chocolate. But roads in Washington state were closed for 10 hours on New Year’s Eve, because of tumbleweeds! A windstorm had piled them  20 to 30 feet high, trapping 10 cars inside. Snowplows were able to break through the tumbleweed wall, freeing everyone before the year ended.

Teen Tyrants

Tyrannosaurus Rex is perhaps the most well-known dinosaur. The T-rex was believed to have a smaller relative, called the Nanotyrannus. After comparing the bones’ growth rings at the microscopic level, scientists now think they weren’t dwarf T-rexes after all. Petey was 15, and Jane was 13. They were probably just teenage Tyrannosaurs!
