Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in Earth’s Northern Hemisphere. The sun’s maximum elevation will be at its lowest, meaning the period of darkness is longest. Starting tomorrow, the days will gradually get longer. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the summer solstice!

Santa’s not the only one who comes down chimneys. In Ohio, a family was surprised to see a squirrel behind the glass doors of their fireplace! The squirrel had scampered down their chimney. He escaped into the living room, and took a wild tour around the house, before being captured and released outside.

Andrew Taylor noticed his local park in New Zealand, was missing something very important. There were no good sticks for his dog to play with! He built a crate and filled it with nice-sized branches. The box was labeled, Stick Library, with a note to please return them. All the dogs love their library!

Today is Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, but it’s more like, Awesome Christmas Sweater! You can buy sweaters with a dinosaur under a disco ball, a UFO with flashing lights, dancing cats, or even Darth Vader in a Santa hat! It’s also Go Caroling Day, so after you dress up, sing some songs with friends.

The fictional country of Wakanda, the home of the superhero Black Panther, was created by Marvel Comics. According to the US Department of Agriculture website, it’s also one of the US’s free trade partners! Oops! They had been using the make-believe country to test out their system’s data tracker, and forgot to remove it.

The billboards are coated with a resin that attracts pollution, and turns it into oxygen when hit by sunlight. It generates the same amount of oxygen as 30 trees, so it’s perfect for cities!

A family in Georgia decorated their Christmas tree with about a dozen owl ornaments. They were shocked to discover, that the tree had come with a bonus ornament. A living owl was hiding in the tree! The screech owl had been there all week. He’s been released safely, to screech happily through the night.

United States President Trump, was impeached yesterday. Impeachment is when a government official is charged with a crime. The US Congress is split into the House of Representatives and the Senate. After representatives vote to impeach a president, senators vote on whether to remove them from office, and let the Vice President take over.
