Do you have red hair? Today’s the day to celebrate its glorious color. It’s Love Your Red Hair Day! Today is also National Doughnut Day. Doughnuts are so good, there’s also a Doughnut Day in June. In 1847, 16 year-old Hanson Gregory claimed the invention of the first ring-shaped doughnut. Pardon me while I go eat doughnuts!

Pigs are actually more intelligent than dogs, so it’s no surprise they can be trained to do tricks. One pig, named Joy, is so good at tricks, that she set a new world record! She performed 13 tricks in one minute. Joy’s human, Dawn Bleeker, owns a movie theater in Iowa, where Joy entertains guests.

Gayle Saye bought a lottery ticket in England. She’d picked the winning numbers in the Thunderball drawing, winning over $646,000! Imagine her surprise, when she realized she’d actually bought 2 identical tickets, doubling her money to over $1,200,000! Sometimew it pays to be absentminded! She said it was the best mistake she ever made.

15 teenagers won awards in the Marine Debris Creative Advocacy Competition. That’s a long name, for ideas to prevent ocean pollution. Team Marine won the Gold Award. The California teens made a giant sculpture out of water bottles, to help educate the community, and inspire the school district to teach environmental literacy.

Pavel Abramov is a talented 9-year-old, who enjoys painting animals in Russia. He also enjoys helping animals, so Pavel and his mother started the Kind Paintbrush project. He sells custom paintings of pets to people around the world, to exchange for food, medicine, and supplies for his local animal shelter.

A 9-year-old boy named Tutankhaten became pharaoh, about 3300 years ago in Egypt. He took the name Tutankhamun, and became one of the most famous Egyptians ever. Today is King Tut Day, when King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922. It’s also Use Your Common Sense Day. You should know better than to do that!

Students at Harvard University have been asked to stop feeding the library bird. A small bird has been living in the Harvard Law School Library, and the free food was making it too comfortable! Officials hope to capture the bird, and release it outdoors. It will have to work on its law degree elsewhere.

A submarine that disappeared during World War 2, has been found off the coast of Malta. The British HMS Urge went missing in 1942, after being sunk by a mine. The University of Malta had been searching the seabed for years, covering 463 square miles, before finally locating the lost submarine. A memorial will be established there.

Everybody wears diapers or nappies as a baby. They might have been disposable or cloth, but they probably weren’t seaweed. That’s about to change! A material called SeaCell, made from seaweed and eucalyptus, is antibacterial, absorbent, and biodegradable. SeaCell is used to make Sumo diapers, which are reusable, recyclable, and look cool too!

In many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, like North America, you got an extra hour to sleep in this morning. The clocks went back one hour, since Daylight Saving Time ended. Many parts of the world changed last week. Not all countries use Daylight Saving, so it’s confusing! Just remember: spring forward, fall back!
