The hagfish is amazingly disgusting. Sometimes called the slime eel, the hagfish has no skull or jaws. It escapes predators by releasing up to 5 gallons of slime, clogging the attacker’s gills with mucous. It eats dead animals by crawling in through their mouth and eating the carcass from the inside out. Happy Hagfish Day!

Jen Mignard was training her sled dog team for a mushing competition in Montana, when the team took off without her. Her sled had tipped over, but the dogs kept going. They led the police on a slow-speed chase, having a great time until they were caught and returned back home.

Pope Francis recognized people who have done extraordinary good works, by canonizing 5 new Saints on Sunday. Afterwards, his official Twitter account accidentally praised the New Orleans Saints football team! He thanked the Lord for #Saints, and Twitter automatically added the team’s emoji. The Saints won their game, and thanked The Pope for his support!

Marine biologists in Hawaii have filmed humpback whales feeding, by using nets. The nets are actually rings of bubbles! The whales swim around their prey blowing bubbles, and other whales eat the animals that get trapped in the column of bubbles. They cooperate to make sure everyone gets fed. That’s so nice of them!

22 year-old Simone Biles just won 5 more gold medals in gymnastics, at the World Championships over the weekend. That brings her total to 25 World medals, more than any gymnast in history. She even has gymnastics moves named after her. You need to watch videos of her routines, to appreciate how amazing and powerful she is!

Go wash your hands. It’s Global Handwashing Day! Washing your hands is an amazingly easy way to stay healthy. Your hands might look clean, but they could still be covered with germs that can make you sick! It’s also Grouch Day. If you’re in a bad mood today, just say you’re celebrating.

Stanley Warley was working upstairs in his Florida home. When he came down, he noticed some objects were out of place, and there was a paw print on his sliding glass door. He checked his security camera, and found he’d been visited by a big bear! It’s a good thing Stanley had stayed upstairs!

The University of Maine owns the world’s largest 3D printer, so it’s only fitting that they also earned the record for the world’s largest 3D printed object, which is also the largest 3D printed boat. The boat, named 3Dirigo, is 25 feet long and weighs 5000 pounds. It only took 72 hours to print!

When you breathe in oxygen, you breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants produce oxygen, and trap the CO2. But nature can’t handle all the harmful carbon released into the air from cars, factories, and burning fuel, and many forests have been destroyed. Reducing your carbon footprint, means you’re responsible for less carbon in our atmosphere.

If you have a holiday from school or work today, it’s probably because of Columbus Day. In recent years however, the celebration has shifted to Native American Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. After all, Columbus did not discover America. The people that were already living there, are the ones we should honor today.
