The kangaroo rat was listed as endangered in Mexico, 24 years ago. No one had spotted one hopping around its desert habitat since 1986. After 30 years with no sightings, scientists thought the kangaroo rat was extinct. But researchers doing a study on other small mammals discovered 4 of them! I guess they were just really good at hiding!

A Malayan Tapir calf was born to Mom Bertie at the Minnesota Zoo. The baby looks like a furry black and white striped watermelon with legs! Malayan tapirs are endangered partly due to habitat loss in Southeast Asia from deforestation for oil palm plantations. Tapirs look kind of like a pig with a trunk!

China is going to build a giant park for the giant panda. The Giant Panda National Park will cover over 10,000 square miles in mountainous southwestern China. It will connect several areas where wild pandas live in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Hopefully, the pandas will spread out, meet each other, and have more baby pandas!

It’s International Polar Bear Day! Polar bears have black skin and hollow transparent hairs that scatter light, making their fur look white! They can grow 9 feet tall and have paws one foot wide. They live in Arctic sea ice regions, so climate change and melting ice has caused polar bears to become endangered.

The sale of ivory has been banned in China! Most ivory is obtained from elephant tusks. Elephants are an endangered species because of poaching and habitat loss. Nearly 30,000 elephants a year were killed illegally for their tusks, so conservationists are excited that China has taken this big step to help protect them.
