Starting in 2020, all new homes in California will be built with solar panels on the roof, to harness energy from the sun. The California Energy Commission hopes that as solar panels become more popular, they will also get cheaper. Solar energy is clean and efficient, and doesn’t pollute the Earth’s atmosphere!

Most trash goes into landfills, big holes that gradually turn into mountains of trash covered with dirt. There is no oxygen to decompose it, and the trash produces methane gas that hurts our atmosphere. About half of the stuff in a landfill is food and paper that could be composted. Build a compost pile and reduce waste!

On April 22nd 1970, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day. He wanted people to focus on the environment, air and water pollution. It grew into a global movement, bringing the world together to try and keep the Earth clean, prevent global warming, and preserve nature for future generations. In March, Portugal generated enough renewable energy through wind and hydro power to supply the entire country with power for a month! By converting wind and water to electricity, Portugal saved the Earth’s atmosphere from 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide. I hope more countries will follow their lead. The Rhone Glacier in the Swiss Alps has been shrinking for decades; it’s lost 1148 feet of thickness since 1856. But the shrinkage is increasing so rapidly that locals have started covering the glacier with white blankets in the summer! They reflect sunlight and reduce melting by 70%! Tucked in snug as a bug in an icy rug.

Egypt is building the largest solar park in the world. The Benban Solar Park will cover 14 square miles and should generate 20% of the country’s energy when it’s finished in 2019. Egypt wants to cut back on using expensive and polluting fossil fuels. They are doing their part to fight global warming.

It’s International Polar Bear Day! Polar bears have black skin and hollow transparent hairs that scatter light, making their fur look white! They can grow 9 feet tall and have paws one foot wide. They live in Arctic sea ice regions, so climate change and melting ice has caused polar bears to become endangered.

As the planet warms and glaciers recede, more ancient artifacts are becoming exposed. Archaeologists have discovered a treasure trove of more than 2000 objects on ice sheets in Norway. The relics include skis, weapons, bones and clothes, some dating back to 4000 BC. They’re doing their best to preserve artifacts as the ice melts.
